PoppiRod H.O. (Hechtrod Original)

All,Here's some commentary about dad's Comet. This is some cool stuff. Since I don't have a hot rod to build/drive, I get to live through others. :) Someday I guess...I'd really like to build a car with my boys. It would help them develop engineering type skills and make fond memories with their dad.
"Hey i think my lic # was GNV 870.....or 860,yopu could try a serch.the motor is in a diff car and the guys dad had put a six in it hopfully it did nt go to the bone as it was a cyclone...and the 9" was still in it.i have the center console still in the barn.""no mine was a cyclone ,it had 11.5 JE pistons.1.94 chevy intake and 1.60 exhust cut down to @ 1.55 and it was hand ported with our old craftmen (sears) hobbie grinders that rick and i got for christmas when we were kids. i think i burned them up doing the porting .custom ground cam with .480 lift and i think 284 duration ...but it had wild timing and with those heads i blew the flywheel off the motor at over 8,000...it might have went to 9,000 rpm...i only had a 8,000 tach and the needle was bouncing off the peg! awsome little motor.the 302 was built with the same pistons ,diff. rods, crank, boss 302counter weight.(it was a add on bob weight that went behind the timing gear ) and block.with the same cam it turned into a torque monster,i could turn those "penny's 8"x26" slicks 1st,2nd,3rd gear it would finaly hook up ...now that was a scary motor ..but it only reved to 7,000 but had way more torque.never got a chance to run that at the drags....they had closed the "dale" by then.what was the K code was that the solid lifter hipo 289? mine had a 195 horse 289 i think.4bbl carb ,top loader 4 speed,8" 3.25 stock gears and they came with faux chrome reverse hub caps. i did have a 57 ford wagon 9" w/4.57 ford factory gears very quite ,i set them up myself at school when i went to citrus college.the pic of the motor was when i had 3x 2bbl carb on it ....that was cool great gas mileage ....untill you step on it .the linkage was very hard to press for the 2 outside carbs but man a little bog if the r's were'nt up but then it pull your neck off. i taded a guy for them they were all pluged up had to rebuild them .came off a 289 thunder bolt fairlane with a fiber glass bubble hood ....great times those were the days i was famous for small block fords, there was a guy in covina that had a faster comet but he couldn't drive it on the street.we traded slicks he needed less gear and i needed more we swaped, ran the cars through the lites and both went faster and quicker so we shook hands and that was that.he later had his power st. link break and hit the rail at the "dale "put all his parts into a falcon ...he's the guy that hooked me up with a trans shop that did my c-4.it would'nt shift above 7,500 so i took the guy for a ride and he said he had no idea i had that much motor ..we ordered the 2nd gear sevro piston from a hertz 350 shelby gt and that fixed the problem....shifted at 8,000 -8,200 i have that on tape some where.put the recorder on the seat and made a few passes at the track...guess i better look for that.papout"

Where there is a Car Show, you'll find Hechtrods

Enjoy! I'm showing Jake the finer points of "balognas" (aka "meats")

Jess' Cobra pics

Here's a couple of pics of Jess Davis' Factory Five Racing Cobra kit car. This "dang" car got me going on hot rods again. Thanks Jess! :) ha ha He took me for a ride the other week when I visited him while on a work related trip. That car ripped.

What Family History is all about!

Here's a string of emails that are very cool! I learned Jess Davis' grandpa baptized my uncle OD and grandpa Nash. Cars, family and friends, its what family history is all about! Send those pics when you got 'em Dennis!
"Chris,

I sent your blog to my dad and this is what he wrote. I didn't know that my grandfather baptized your grandfather. Cool huh. I didn't know our family's went that far back. Jess

These are great. My dad baptized O.D. and Suzie's dad in Alhambra. That would be Chris' Grandpa Nash.

I also have some pictures of when that girl ran into the Hecht's garage - Black & White Negatives, anyway. I don't know if I ever actually made the pictures.

I should look for some pictures of all you kids when you were growing up. Chris would love them.

Dad"

BrentRod pics

These are some pics of BrentRods nice rides. These are some of the coolest rides in Hechtrod History. We have here the 2003 Ford Focus ZX3 that ran 14.9's on drag radials at Bakersfield's Famoso Dragstrip. That's not even what the Focus did best, it was an amazing car in the twisties. The 1987 Mustang LX Coupe with a Turbocoupe 2.3L Turbo motor that dyno'd at 277whp and ran mid 14's with much tire spin. BrentRod did a lot of work to this car, he rebuilt the motor, fabbed the custom intercooler piping to make a Front mounted intercooler, bought a T3/T4 turbo and was running 20 psi or so (can't remember exact specs). This car was sweet. Not to mention all the suspension and brake work. This was a nice handling machine. Too bad he sold it for pennies. Then there are pics of the late '95 Mustang GT, same color as Poppi's '94 stang. Brent's stang had a custom fabbed cold air intake, Poppi's ported stock intake manifold, my stangs old 18x9 faubra wheels with 4 lug nuts each. Ask Brent about those later! :) Still need pics of Brent's Turbocoupe Thunderbird he wrecked and the '68 Merc' Cougar. Sweet rides.

RickyRod pics

These pictures were taken when Jacob and I picked up Uncle Rickrod and went to the Bracket Field Air Show/Car Show summer of 2005. Here are some pics I snapped of Rick checking out some nice rides, 4 wheeled and 2 wheeled. Here's a pic of his sweet '65 Oldsmobile 442 with a built 425ci (correct?). It's been in the fam for 15+ years or so. It was fired up summer 2006 before Ben went off to school. Finish that Hechtrod Uncle Rick. How much you want to sell it for? :)

Benrod and Nickrod

Here's Benrod I believe in his earliest Hechtrod, doing some practice laps, testing out that 1 dp (daddy power). :) Good times.
Here's the nice '65 ("The mustang was actually a ‘65, with the honeycomb grill, way cooler than the rectangular grill of the ‘66 in my opinion.") Mustang and Benrod and Nickrod proudly standing next to their steed. I got a ride in this bad boy once. It was pretty quick. Why'd you let this one go? Oh yeah, it had an auto trans. :) j/k

Here's a pic of the Dodge Daytona IROC, a little 2.5LTurbo charged 4 cyl and FWD. I rode in it once, it was decent. Gotta love turbos.

Here's a pic of Benrods '96 LT1 powered Slo...Camaro! :) This baby pumped out about 330whp I believe on a chassis dyno. It's got the bolt ons, plus some head work and a cam. No ET's yet.

Original Hechtrod

Check out these vintage Hechtrod pics, circa 1974 to 1976. I don't have all the specs but these are pics of my mom and dad with my dad's 1964 Mercury Comet Cyclone, equipped with a 289 and a 4 speed, later being upgraded with a 302. I think an automatic was installed and then removed. He owned it from about 1972 ish to about 1982 or 83. It's got Cragar wheels in front and stock steelies with cheater slicks. He ran a best of 13.70's in the 1/4 mile at the old Irwindale drag strip in California and would shift at 8000+ rpms. I remember my dad mentioning a lot of do it yourself modifications, such as Chevy dual valve springs and bigger valves, high compression pistons, 4.56 gears in a Ford 9" rear end, suspension tweaks in the rear for better traction and loud mufflers. :) This car cruised the streets of San Gabriel Valley in the early 1970's. It was sold after a teenage girl ran through our garage in her car and busted up the passenger side. Man I wish I could find that car.
